Our History
SARAH SENECA Residential Services, Inc. evolved from the agency called SARAH which was established in 1957 by a small group of families with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At that time the only option available to individuals with these challenges was confinement to one of Connecticut’s institutions.
These families wanted their sons and daughters to remain active members of their communities. Together they started a revolutionary process that soon culminated in the creation of supported homes, a school, and a number of small business opportunities which employed the skills that these individuals could provide to the community.
In 1990 Sarah split itself into four self-sustaining agencies. These four Sarah agencies include:
- SARAH SENECA Residential Services, Inc.
- SARAH Tuxis
- The SARAH Foundation:
- SARAH Inc.
As of 2023, Sarah’s family agencies include:
- SARAH SENECA Residential Services, Inc.
- SARAH Tuxis
- The SARAH Foundation:
SARAH SENECA Residential Services, Inc. is currently its own entity and has prided itself on providing quality residential support for individuals with DDS funding.

The SARAH Foundation, a separate 501 c (3) organization, manages fundraising, special events, gift giving, car donations, the SARAH cupboard Thrift Shop and the long term growth of the SARAH Family of Agencies.
Gifts may be designated to the SARAH Family of Agencies or to SARAH SENECA Residential Services, Inc.
