Where does the name SARAH SENECA Residential Services, Inc. come from?

  • The name SARAH originally stood for the ‘Shoreline Association of Retarded and Handicapped’ citizens.
  • SENECA is the name of a regional Native American Tribe. Its name was use to differentiate between the other residential agency SARAH Tuxis.

How do I go about the process of receiving services from SARAH SENECA?

  • All individuals served by SARAH SENECA must receive funding for residential services from the Department of Developmental Services (DDS).
  • An individual needs to meet specific criteria in order to be enrolled by DDS, the most important requirement is that the individual is also enrolled in Medicaid via the Department of Social Services (DSS)

Are all homes owned by SARAH SENECA?

  • SARAH SENECA owns and operates nine homes housing approximately (40) individuals; however, the majority of the individuals supported by SARAH SENECA live in houses or apartments rented by the individuals themselves.

Who signs the lease on a rental property?

  • The individual(s) who reside in the property will sign their own lease. SARAH SENECA may be asked by the Landlord to co-sign the lease.

How many housemates does my family member have to live with?

  • There are two primary factors that deal with the issue of housemates:
    1. An individuals desire to either live alone or with one or more housemates;
    2. The financial resources of an individual and his/her need to have a housemate to share expenses.

What funding is utilized by individuals to pay for expenses?

  • This depends on the individual, however, generally the following sources of income if available are utilized:
    • Social Security Check (SSDI)
    • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
    • State of Connecticut rent subsidy
    • Wages from job
    • Food Stamps / DSS
    • Other entitlement

Who will look after the many health needs of my family member?

  • SARAH SENECA has a professional Nursing Department that will work closely with Managers and Support Staff to insure that all medical, dental, psychological and psychiatric needs are maintained according to State regulations.

Who will oversee my family member’s finances, especially Social Security?

  • We can take care of that. All Managers have experience in dealing with State entitlements and the on-going documentation required for re-determinations.
